Introduction

Currently there are over 22,000 security system companies in the UK all hoping to win your business. There are no restrictions as to who can start a security company in the UK and no statutory requirements to installing most types of systems.

There are some excellent companies in the UK, both large and small organisations, but sadly there are many companies that don’t even have the most basic skills and are bringing our industry into disrepute.

We have developed this document to give you the tools to make an informed decision when selecting a new supplier. Hopefully I have provided some valuable information that will ensure that you get the best value for money or, more importantly, save you any embarrassment.

Disciplines

There are four main disciplines of property security. Most companies will claim to be experts in all fields although, as this document will inform you, this may not be the case.

Access Control	Access Control is the generic term for any type of system that secures entry or exit to an area. This is typically a control device fitted to a door but can also be used to secure turnstiles, barriers etc. here are many forms of access control systems from the most basic digital keypad through to a complex PC controlled system.
CCTV	Closed Circuit T.V. systems are now commonplace and covers all forms of cameras and surveillance equipment.
Intruder / Alarms	Systems installed to detected unauthorised entry.
Physical Security	Devices used to physically secure an area such as locks, reinforced doors etc.
